When God's promises aren't fulfilled for what seems to be a long time, Abram and Sarai take things into their own hands, looking to have a child through Sarai's servant Hagar. Their lapse of faith leads to nothing but pain and strife, but God assures Abram that he will still carry out his promise through Sarai, changing their names respectively to Abraham and Sarah. And as the Lord proves his faithfulness even after decades of silence, Abraham and Sarah set a new example of faith in the promise, in wonderful contrast to the worldly approach they took before.
